Have you just completed your matric exams? What are your prospective plans for the year ahead? Unsure? We break down the options available.
On January 4, the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motsheka announced the 2017 Matric Exam results. According to the national results, the pass rate increased from 72.5% in 2016 to 75.1% in 2017.
Now that all the results are out, there are various avenues available for matriculants to travel. Have you just completed your matric successfully or do you want to re-do your matric?

Matric Results 2017
According to the 2017 National Examination report, there were 534 484 pupils who wrote the matric exams. Out of those, 153 000 obtained a Bachelors pass. This might sound rather impressive, however, there were 629 155 pupils at the start of the matric year. This is a drop out rate of 15%. The report highlights the aspects that the Department plan to hide from the rest of the country. According to the report, only two thirds of pupils who qualify for university actually attend. Receiving of a matric of any kind will guarantee that you will receive an income that is twice as much as someone who doesn't. Not Happy With Your Results?
If you are unhappy with your results, there are other options. Students have until January 19 to submit their exams for re-marks or re-checking. The student can apply for the re-mark at the school that they matriculated from, otherwise at the provincial education department office. According to the Department, all the details pertaining to this process can be found at the back of the official result script. The price for a re-mark or a re-check is the following:- Re-mark- R98;
- Re-check- R23.
Take Two... Action
According to the Department, students can register to take the supplementary examinations during the test period in March 2018. They need to register with the department for this before January 19. If learners have failed their matric and would like to take it again, there are options available. The Basic Education Department's Second Chance Matric Support Programme is available to all students who wish to repeat their matric year. Students who would most likely want to take part in this programme would be learners who failed to meet tertiary education requirements. The students will receive face-to-face classes by some of the best subject teachers in the country. One of the more popular after-school choices is to study further. Applying to a university can be daunting in itself, however, not knowing what to apply for can be even worse. If you already know what you want to study, make sure to get all your documentation together and apply as soon as application opens. This year, however, most tertiary institutions have closed their intake for the year. This means that students wanting to study will have to wait for next application intake, which is normally towards the end of the year. If studying is not for you, why not get yourself a job. Not only will you be earning money, but you will be learning about the struggles of the 'real world'. Nowadays, most jobs only require a matric certificate unless the position is specialized. According to the Department's report, someone with a matric will earn double what someone who doesn't possess a matric earns.Take A Gap Year
Many students who are unsure as to what they want to do once they have matriculated, decide to take a gap year. This could be anything from finding a job behind a bar to travelling the world with some friends. Taking a gap year is basically taking some time out to figure out your next life step. There are many opinion surrounding gap years, as many people believe that once you take a gap year, getting back into the studying thing could be really tough. This can differ from person to person and, for many, taking a gap year is the best thing as it gives you some time to decide if and what you want to study.Teach Overseas
Teaching English abroad has become very popular among students, especially matriculants. This is not only an easy way to make some money, but it is a great way to travel the world. All candidates must complete a TEFL course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) before they travel.
